Charlotte Tilbury matte revolution lipstick, worth the hype?

Flatlay of Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipsticks in shades Pillow Talk and Bond Girl

Ah Charlotte Tilbury, the queen of some of the most aesthetically pleasing, skin perfecting, no makeup-but-secretly-wearing-shitloads-of-makeup products out there. It’s no secret that her tonally perfect, copper-clad goodies are every Instagrammers dream, and products like Wonder Glow and the Hollywood Flawless Filter foundation have become the stuff of legend since her rise to cosmetic fame over the last few years, but the must have accessory of the moment is without a doubt a CT lippie. I mean is your makeup bag really complete if it doesn’t feature one of these metallic little beauties? They’re practically fashion.

Word on the street for some time now has been that the must-have item is a Matte Revolution lipstick, with the range having shot to social media fame and being featured in just about every editorial out there. In fact it’s been so in-your-face visible that I can’t quite believe it’s taken me this long to try them out.

The colour range is a dream with something to suit every skin tone, and many shades being inspired by fashion and beauty icons from across the decades, making them easily relatable when trying to envisage your perfect shade. There’s even a pretty sweet feature on the website where you can view the shade on a wide variety of skin tones for a realistic idea of how it will suit you.

I wanted to select a perfect nude for both day and night, so after much deliberating settled on the critically acclaimed (and consistently sold out) Pillow talk for day, and Bond Girl for night.

Here’s what Charlotte has to say about these shades…

“Pillow Talk -The universally-loved, best-selling lipstick launched to give all women what Charlotte Tilbury calls ‘the most beautiful lips of your life’. The moisturising matte formula smooths and shapes the lips of your dreams to allure, tempt and perfect every pout. It’s formulated for every woman at every age and any skin tone. “

“Bond Girl – Darlings, mimic the sultry, alluring look of the Bond beauties. My Matte Revolution Lipstick in Bond Girl has all the ingredients for a lit-from-within pout. This gorgeously chic natural berry shade is inspired by the Bond girls from Halle Berry to Barbara Bach to Olga Kurylenko.”

Convinced that my life was about to be changed forever with a mere slick of lipstick, I just had to share the results with you guys, so here it is, what is possibly about to become one of the most unpopular opinions on the internet today… they’re OK.

I know, I know, we were all expecting proclamations of love right about now, but for £24 a lipstick, I just wanted a little…more. Here’s why:

The colours are a dream, they really are, but for a matte lipstick I find that they lack a little opacity. When I apply a matte lipstick, I expect full colour in a single swipe, but with this I found I needed a good few layers before the colour reached it’s full potential. To be fair, the website does label the lipsticks as ‘buildable’, but if I wanted to buy a sheer lipstick, I’d buy a sheer lipstick.

To give you guys genuine view of how these apply, in the above pictures I’ve applied straight from the bullet as recommended on the website which states the following as a feature:

“Revolutionary, square, angled tip mimics the shape of a lip brush for precision application”

I also didn’t use a matching lip liner to test the true precision of the application. The lipstick boasts a cashmere finish thanks to lip nourishing ingredients such as orchid extract, and long lasting results. I’ll give them the cashmere finish, my lips really did feel smooth and soft, however due to having to layer it on to achieve the maximum colour payoff, I still felt that it was a little thick feeling. As for being long lasting, I’m afraid this was another downside for me. After only a couple of hours without eating or drinking anything there was a significant amount of fading and I had to reapply. Oh dear Charlotte…

Don’t get me wrong, there really are many positives too. Pillow Talk when paired with a liner (I used a Kiko Golden Waves liner) is truly stunning, and lasted much longer. For the shade alone I’ll go back to this one time and time again, it really is the perfect nude. You can also tell by the feel that they are made using quality ingredients which is great. Bond girl didn’t quite deliver the deep berry shade that I expected, however it is a fabulous universal tone that would suit almost any skin tone. I just can’t help but feel overall that the Matte Revolution lipsticks are just a little too style over substance for me, and as gorgeous and flashy as they may look in an Instagram post, I probably wouldn’t repurchase in the future.

Have you guys tried the Matte Revolution lipsticks? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Until next time,

ROOTS VEGAN JUNK FOOD TAKEOVER AT NINETY-NINE BAR & KITCHEN

Roots Catering Vegan Junk Food blog header

Lets get one thing straight, I’m not a vegan. Cheese will forever be the one thing that yanks on those extremely slack dairy-free reigns and says ‘Woah there!’ and leaves me trotting along at my vegetarian pace, but with menus like this on offer right here in Aberdeen, even the most carnivorous of you out there will be tempted to give veganism a go, even if only for one night.

Enter Roots Catering, the plant based brainchild of South African born chef Nick Coetzer. Up until now Nick’s plant-based journey has been one centred around fine-dining, hosting five course menu pop-ups at venues such as Foodstory, which by all reports have been massive hits. Coming from a non-vegan background, Nick’s menus have been hugely experimental, and visually stunning, not to mention sold out – which is why I’ve struggled to attend a Roots event as yet.

Now I love fine dining as much as the next foodie, but the single mention of meat-free junk food had me quick-drawing my phone and booking a table faster than you can say vegan cheese, and it’s a bloody good job I did, as only two days after the night was announced, all bar my one remaining lucky table was booked out! It really is no wonder why either, with offerings such as loaded cheese fries, Southern fried chick’aint and pulled bbq mushroom tacos, the increasingly large vegan/veggie population of Aberdeen were sure to be fighting each other to the (cruelty free) death for a spot at this sure-fire hit of an evening.

As a regular haunt of ours, I was delighted that Ninety-nine bar & kitchen were going to be playing host for the night. The laid back setting and atmosphere lends itself perfectly to the street food vibe that the menu offered. We all know that Ninety-nine are the home of bespoke cocktails in the city centre, so as would be expected, in collaboration with Roots they put together a mouth-watering vegan cocktail menu to accompany the food. Disappointingly for myself and the other half, it was a school night, so in a rare moment of sensibility, we stuck to a refreshing pint to wash down the oncoming feast, however with options such as a White Chocolate Ramos Gin Fizz and a Five Dollar Shake, i was left seriously wishing that it was a Saturday night!

Let’s get to the food…

Let’s face it, when it comes to vegan and veggie food, choices are often limited and the same old, ill thought out, soup/salad/rabbit food options are just plain depressing after a while, so with so many insanely tasty sounding, definitely not diet friendly options on offer, this was never going to be an easy choice. So we decided not to make one…we made five instead. Diet starts Monday, right?! I just want to make it clear that everything we tried was a roaring success, but in light of not wanting my readers to fall asleep as I pour over each and every delicious element of every dish, here are my selection of absolute faves:

Korean pulled bbq mushroom tacos, pickled rainbow slaw, sriracha mayo, toasted sesame seeds and peanuts.

The tacos…oh sweet baby Jesus the tacos. Lashings of bbq sauce were rich with layers of taste-bud-tingling flavours and just the right amount of heat. The mushrooms perfectly replaced the soft meaty texture that you would normally get from a slow-cooked protein and the peanuts added a nice crunchy element to bring it all together. The micro corriander topping delivered a burst of fresh flavour bringing everything together. Seriously, give me these joy-filled soft shells any day of the week and I’ll be one very happy lady!

Southern fried Chick’aint goujons with crack sauce.

I’ve been meat-free for almost four years now, but I’ll be the first one to admit that I still get cravings for junk foods of days gone by. For most veggie’s it’s bacon. For me, just walking past a KFC is enough to reduce me to a drooling mess. These chick’aint goujons could have any meat-eater walk in of the street and leave convinced that they had been served a meal from the Colonel himself. Perfectly spiced, crunchy and moist in the middle, I couldn’t have asked for anything more. Where do I even get started with that aptly named crack sauce too?! Nick kindly found time to come say hi during the hustle and bustle of a busy service and confirmed our suspicions that the sauce was based on Big Mac sauce, admitting that he used to have a bit of an obsession with the stuff smothered over a burger. Well move over burgers, I’d gladly have this slathered over about 90% of the foods that I eat. In fact I did just that for the next few days, as Nick was kind enough to give us an extra portion away with us after proclaiming our undying love for this tangy little beauty.

Side of mac & cheese with crispy shitake bacon.

I consider myself a bit of a mac & cheese connoisseur, the cheesier the better in my opinion, which is why I’ve often felt let down by vegan imitations in the past, they just haven’t quite hit mark, but I had high hopes for the Roots take on this classic. I was not disappointed. This weighty portion came with a creamy sauce that had the familiar sweetness of what I presume was butternut squash that I’ve experienced in other vegan versions, however this time it seemed to be cut with the sharpness of what I could absolutely swear were chunks of cheddar throughout. Combined with generous toppings of spring onions and that incredible shitake bacon (which I can only assume was conjured up using actual wizardry), this was one satisfying wee box of flavoursome ‘cheesy’ goodness.

Also ordered were the Southern fried Chick’aint burger and the loaded fries which were both equally calorific and satisfying in the most wonderful way, but like I said, we haven’t got all day!

The stroke of genius for me was that everything was served in environmentally friendly take-out style cardboard boxes, leaving us to pack up the remainder of our ridiculous over-order and take it home for the next day. Not only that but our awesome server (who along with the rest of the staff had been left the remaining brownies from the dessert option which we physically had no room left to try) packed up a couple of brownies for us to take home and try later. Hurrah for being saved from the absolute tragedy of a missed dessert! And yes, I can confirm that they were just as deceptively wonderful as any dairy filled brownie I’ve ever tasted.

Now, who’s going to be first to sign my petition to make this incredible night a monthly event and bring tears of joy to vegans, veggies and everyone else in between?

Until this dream hopefully becomes a reality you can catch Roots at their next pop up, a brunch event being hosted at Parx Cafe on Sunday the 10th March from 9-3. This event is walk in only, and sure to be as much of a hit as this one was, so get there early.

See you in the queue!

Aberdeen Restaurant Week at Cafe Harmony – a review.

It’s that time of year that every foodie who knows the score has been waiting for; Restaurant week is finally here and it’s going to be a great one.

In case you still aren’t sure, you can read all about it in my ARW 2019 blog post which explains it all.

As a Restaurant Week ambassador in partnership with Aberdeen Inspired, I basically have the best job in the world in that I get to go try out delicious food at participating venues and report back to you lovely lot all about it… It’s a hard life, I know!

This time I was lucky enough to visit the lovely Cafe Harmony, a cosy Mediterranean trattoria located in the heart of the city centre on Bon Accord Terrace, just a minutes walk from Union Street.

Stepping in to Cafe Harmony, it was warm and inviting, a welcome retreat from the icy cold outside and the friendly greeting from staff set the tone for the night. With an eclectic decor and unique details everywhere you look, it feels homely yet authentic.

The dairy bucket lamps were a particular highlight for a home decor obsessive such as myself.

The menu

I’ve actually been dying to try this restaurant for some time now, but have failed to get a booking a couple of times – surely a testament to the popularity of this eatery, so get your ARW booking in quickly! The lure has always been with the boasts of fresh local produce and extensive vegetarian options.

Here’s a wee peek at the Restaurant week menu…

For me it’s so important that any business I support has a moral stance of some sort, and Cafe Harmony embodies this perfectly. Here’s what they have to say about their values :

“Our ethos is simple…

At Cafe Harmony we are dedicated to and passionate about showcasing the incredible artisan food and drinks producers in the North East of Scotland. We strive to source as much of our produce from as close to the restaurant as possible, not only to reduce the negative impact on the environment, but also to support our local economy, which we care so dearly about.”

You really can’t ask for much more than that.

The Starters

After viewing the menu I was positively salivating at the thought of getting some fresh, tasty Italian food in my belly, and we were thankful for the prompt arrival of the starters.

It was a tough choice as I was super tempted by the hummus, (I mean how often do you get more than one decent veggie option for a starter? Not often I can tell you!) but I opted for the bruschetta and the other half went for the Calamari.

Concasse Tomato Bruschetta

Fried Calamari.

The Bruschetta was fresh and fragrant, with bold garlic and olive oil flavours bursting through. The thing I loved most about this was the healthy feel created by the plethora of different chopped veg piled high on to each little toast. The portion was large, but Grant benefited from this by taking care of anything that I couldn’t manage; it really is fabulous value for money.

As for the Calamari, Grant deemed it light and perfectly cooked, and loved the twist of the giant nacho that the calamari was stacked upon. The homemade tartar sauce was the perfect accompaniment, sharp and citrusy.

With clear plates all round, the starter was a definite success.

The Mains

Once again it was great to have more than one vegetarian option to choose from here. To satisfy my carb craving I went for the Tagliatelle and Grant went for the veggie lasagne.

Tagliatelle alla Norma

Homemade Lasagne

I rarely order anything but pasta from an Italian, there’s just something about fresh pasta that tastes so much better, and the tagliatelle did not disappoint. This dish had a really unique twist in that the top layer of pasta was wrapped in soft aubergine, concealing a generous layer of tangy ricotta, which I absolutely loved! The ricotta was lovely and melty, and the flavourful sauce was packed with sun dried tomatoes and other fresh veg, all topped with a decent whack of fresh basil which gave the whole dish a beautiful fresh taste. This is a dish that I would definitely order again.

Obviously I had to sample Grant’s lasagne too, and I’m going to make a very bold statement about what I thought of it here…This is not only the best veggie lasagne I’ve ever tasted, but the best lasagne I’ve had FULL STOP.

I know, it’s quite the statement to make, but believe me, I’ve eaten more lasagne than Garfield in my time, and this genuinely does rank the highest.

The moment you bite in to a chunk of this little beauty, you are met with layers of gooey mozzarella, aromatic rocket pesto, and super rich sun dried tomato and aubergine sauce.

Not gonna lie, despite thoroughly enjoying my own main, I was pretty envious of the fact that Grant got to devour the majority of this one. This dish really is a triumph, and one that I would return for time and time again.

The Desserts

I was fairly full by this point but it would have been rude not to have sampled the desserts, especially given that you’re getting all three courses for an incredible £20. Feeling like a light option, I selected the sorbet and Grant went for the Tiramisu.

Mango and Sicilian lemon sorbets

Homemade Tiramisu

These no fuss desserts really hit the spot and finished off the meal perfectly. The simple presentation let the flavours really shine through, and the icy blast of the mouthwateringly citrusy lemon sorbet was exactly what I needed to cleanse my pallet of all of the rich flavours that we’d previously enjoyed.

Not being a coffee fan, I didn’t try the Tiramisu, but I’ll take Grant’s word for it that it was creamy, heady and satisfying.

With bellies full of hearty and authentic Mediterranean food and wine, we left Cafe Harmony already talking of our inevitable return visit for another helping of THAT lasagne.

Make sure to check out Cafe Harmony along with all of the other incredible restaurants involved with restaurant over at the Aberdeen Restaurant Week website. Don’t forget that Restaurant week is running from the 4th to the 10th of February, so get those bookings in ASAP to avoid missing out.

Aberdeen Restaurant week 2019

Loosen your belt a couple of notches folks, because Aberdeen Restaurant week is back with a bang, and you’re going to want to get involved!

For any of you that have been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know that I spent a week last September eating my way through five separate menus as part of the Aberdeen Inspired blog squad to the point where I was fit to burst – in the best way possible.

The wonderful people at Aberdeen Inspired have only gone and done it again, and this time it’s bigger and better than ever, and I’m delighted to say that I’m also back as an ARW ambassador. This means that I’ll be bringing you all the latest on what the deals are, where to find them, and where in my opinion the tastiest eats are at.

If you’re not sure what it’s all about, take a look at this…

Restaurant week is all about getting out there and exploring all of the fabulous independent eateries that are right on your doorstep, for even more fabulous prices.

All week long, you’ll be offered tantalizingly tasty menus from a variety of bistros, bars and brasseries for the incredible prices of just £10 for a two course lunch, or £20 for a three course dinner. This time a selection of ARW venues will also be hosting afternoon teas and tasting menus, so there really is something for everyone.

Above are just a few of the phenomenal dishes I tried last year from the likes of The Craftsman, Da Vinci Ristorante, 99 Bar and Kitchen and Bistro Verde, boy was I spoiled that week!

Joining the lineup this year you’ll also find venues such as The Kirkview cafe, Atlantis, Cafe Boheme, Cafe 52, Melt, Siberia and many more. You can find a full list of venues and a breakdown of what they will be offering on the Aberdeen Restaurant Week website, so be sure to check it out for all the latest updates. You can also head to the Aberdeen Inspired instagram for all the latest goings on and updates from the other amazing ARW ambassadors.

I’m lucky enough to be officially reviewing Cafe Harmony so keep an eye out for that, but unofficially, I can tell that this is going to be a terrible week for my diet as I work my way through some of the other amazing menus on offer (ZERO REGRETS ABOUT THIS).

There really is no better time to get out there and explore the best of our local cuisine, so book a table, maybe book a few, and have a fantastic Restaurant Week everyone.

MY 2019 NON-RESOLUTIONS…

Resolution

/rɛzəˈluːʃ(ə)n/

noun

1. A firm decision to do or not to do something.

  1. “After her near death experience that fateful Sunday morning,
Becca kept her resolution never to drink again”

Like bollocks she did.

It’s my opinion that resolutions are no more than a way of publicly
guilting ourselves in to doing something that we’re not actually all
that committed to, but feel like we really should be. We declare
these usually completely unrealistic goals out loud hoping that
someone will hold us accountable to actually following through with
them, but the truth is, no one particularly gives a shit. Soz.

That isn’t to say that your BFF’s won’t be super impressed and proud
of whatever you do manage to tick off of the mental achievement
list – of course they will, that’s what pals are for. It’s just that if
December comes around and you haven’t quite gotten round to
taking that skydive, or penning a best-selling novel yet, guess what,
they’ll love you all the same. The only person who will beat you up
about it is yourself, and really, who has the time for that?!

Let me paint a clearer picture here. Here are some of the
things I ‘resolved’ myself to do last year:

* Learn to play the Ukulele and become ‘cool chick’ with surprising
hidden talent reserved for after-parties and impressing strangers.

* Learn German at a passable conversational level for our trip to Berlin.

* Land a dream job, make enough money to go on idyllic island getaway
holiday for at least a month.

* Unleash inner interior designer resulting in well put together and
immaculately maintained Pinterest worthy house.

* Learn calligraphy, become envy of all friends and relatives come Christmas card writing time.

* Lose three stone and become fitness inspiration to all those that gaze
upon my perfectly sculpted body.

* Give in to years of hearing ‘oh my god you should totally start a blog!’
and actually do it.

Here’s how these actually went:

* Learned two chords then decided was too hard. Ukulele now gathering
dust in corner.

* Deleted Duolingo to make space for hair colour changing app. Decided

blue hair was not for me. Now remember only two words – ‘schwanz’
and ‘prost’. Not often heard in sentences together. Almost got banned from
Berlin.

* Left a job. Was unemployed for three months. Ate excessive amount of
cheesy poofs and remained in pyjamas for undisclosed amount of time.
Surprisingly no island holiday.

* House remains much the same as last year, except pile of unfinished interiors

related projects in spare room (a.k.a dumping ground)
significantly larger. Ukulele in corner does however add to decor marvelously.

* Bought calligraphy set. Actually bought incorrect calligraphy set. Crap calligraphy

set now at bottom of drawer.

* Lost one stone pre-holiday in regimented calorie controlled diet. Continued ‘holiday

mode’ eating for rest of year. Put stone (plus some..) back on.

* Actually started a blog, Hurrah! Am not total failure.

My point is, how likely was it that I would really ever achieve all of these?
About as likely as me waking up on a Sunday swearing that I’ll never drink
again and actually sticking to it…

Don’t get me wrong though, I’m still setting myself some goals for the year.
It’s totally healthy to want to better yourself in any way you can will help
you live that ‘best life’ that we’re all reaching for, and learning new skills
is always a totally badass thing to do. All I’m saying is I’m not going to put
so much bloody pressure on myself to be this perfect version of me. I’m
actually pretty ok just the way I am, but this year I aim to be a little bit more,
and maybe sometimes a little bit less.

A little more motivated, a little less procrastination.

A little more sociable, a little less couch potato and pyjamas.

A little more fit and healthy, a little less critical of my wobbly bits and
muffin top.

A little more time spent enjoying this crazy life, a little less taking the
small stuff so seriously.

A little more damn proud of myself when I do achieve something awesome,
a little less ‘I’m not good enough’, because that is just BULLSHIT, and the only
thing ever holding me back is myself. Well no more of that this year. 2019
will be the year of ‘I CAN’.

*accepts flowers, dons Miss Self Love 2019 crown, takes a bow, sashays away*

Have a great year everyone, you deserve it.
