Aberdeen Restaurant Week at Cafe Harmony – a review.

It’s that time of year that every foodie who knows the score has been waiting for; Restaurant week is finally here and it’s going to be a great one.

In case you still aren’t sure, you can read all about it in my ARW 2019 blog post which explains it all.

As a Restaurant Week ambassador in partnership with Aberdeen Inspired, I basically have the best job in the world in that I get to go try out delicious food at participating venues and report back to you lovely lot all about it… It’s a hard life, I know!

This time I was lucky enough to visit the lovely Cafe Harmony, a cosy Mediterranean trattoria located in the heart of the city centre on Bon Accord Terrace, just a minutes walk from Union Street.

Stepping in to Cafe Harmony, it was warm and inviting, a welcome retreat from the icy cold outside and the friendly greeting from staff set the tone for the night. With an eclectic decor and unique details everywhere you look, it feels homely yet authentic.

The dairy bucket lamps were a particular highlight for a home decor obsessive such as myself.

The menu

I’ve actually been dying to try this restaurant for some time now, but have failed to get a booking a couple of times – surely a testament to the popularity of this eatery, so get your ARW booking in quickly! The lure has always been with the boasts of fresh local produce and extensive vegetarian options.

Here’s a wee peek at the Restaurant week menu…

For me it’s so important that any business I support has a moral stance of some sort, and Cafe Harmony embodies this perfectly. Here’s what they have to say about their values :

“Our ethos is simple…

At Cafe Harmony we are dedicated to and passionate about showcasing the incredible artisan food and drinks producers in the North East of Scotland. We strive to source as much of our produce from as close to the restaurant as possible, not only to reduce the negative impact on the environment, but also to support our local economy, which we care so dearly about.”

You really can’t ask for much more than that.

The Starters

After viewing the menu I was positively salivating at the thought of getting some fresh, tasty Italian food in my belly, and we were thankful for the prompt arrival of the starters.

It was a tough choice as I was super tempted by the hummus, (I mean how often do you get more than one decent veggie option for a starter? Not often I can tell you!) but I opted for the bruschetta and the other half went for the Calamari.

Concasse Tomato Bruschetta

Fried Calamari.

The Bruschetta was fresh and fragrant, with bold garlic and olive oil flavours bursting through. The thing I loved most about this was the healthy feel created by the plethora of different chopped veg piled high on to each little toast. The portion was large, but Grant benefited from this by taking care of anything that I couldn’t manage; it really is fabulous value for money.

As for the Calamari, Grant deemed it light and perfectly cooked, and loved the twist of the giant nacho that the calamari was stacked upon. The homemade tartar sauce was the perfect accompaniment, sharp and citrusy.

With clear plates all round, the starter was a definite success.

The Mains

Once again it was great to have more than one vegetarian option to choose from here. To satisfy my carb craving I went for the Tagliatelle and Grant went for the veggie lasagne.

Tagliatelle alla Norma

Homemade Lasagne

I rarely order anything but pasta from an Italian, there’s just something about fresh pasta that tastes so much better, and the tagliatelle did not disappoint. This dish had a really unique twist in that the top layer of pasta was wrapped in soft aubergine, concealing a generous layer of tangy ricotta, which I absolutely loved! The ricotta was lovely and melty, and the flavourful sauce was packed with sun dried tomatoes and other fresh veg, all topped with a decent whack of fresh basil which gave the whole dish a beautiful fresh taste. This is a dish that I would definitely order again.

Obviously I had to sample Grant’s lasagne too, and I’m going to make a very bold statement about what I thought of it here…This is not only the best veggie lasagne I’ve ever tasted, but the best lasagne I’ve had FULL STOP.

I know, it’s quite the statement to make, but believe me, I’ve eaten more lasagne than Garfield in my time, and this genuinely does rank the highest.

The moment you bite in to a chunk of this little beauty, you are met with layers of gooey mozzarella, aromatic rocket pesto, and super rich sun dried tomato and aubergine sauce.

Not gonna lie, despite thoroughly enjoying my own main, I was pretty envious of the fact that Grant got to devour the majority of this one. This dish really is a triumph, and one that I would return for time and time again.

The Desserts

I was fairly full by this point but it would have been rude not to have sampled the desserts, especially given that you’re getting all three courses for an incredible £20. Feeling like a light option, I selected the sorbet and Grant went for the Tiramisu.

Mango and Sicilian lemon sorbets

Homemade Tiramisu

These no fuss desserts really hit the spot and finished off the meal perfectly. The simple presentation let the flavours really shine through, and the icy blast of the mouthwateringly citrusy lemon sorbet was exactly what I needed to cleanse my pallet of all of the rich flavours that we’d previously enjoyed.

Not being a coffee fan, I didn’t try the Tiramisu, but I’ll take Grant’s word for it that it was creamy, heady and satisfying.

With bellies full of hearty and authentic Mediterranean food and wine, we left Cafe Harmony already talking of our inevitable return visit for another helping of THAT lasagne.

Make sure to check out Cafe Harmony along with all of the other incredible restaurants involved with restaurant over at the Aberdeen Restaurant Week website. Don’t forget that Restaurant week is running from the 4th to the 10th of February, so get those bookings in ASAP to avoid missing out.

Aberdeen Restaurant week 2019

Loosen your belt a couple of notches folks, because Aberdeen Restaurant week is back with a bang, and you’re going to want to get involved!

For any of you that have been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know that I spent a week last September eating my way through five separate menus as part of the Aberdeen Inspired blog squad to the point where I was fit to burst – in the best way possible.

The wonderful people at Aberdeen Inspired have only gone and done it again, and this time it’s bigger and better than ever, and I’m delighted to say that I’m also back as an ARW ambassador. This means that I’ll be bringing you all the latest on what the deals are, where to find them, and where in my opinion the tastiest eats are at.

If you’re not sure what it’s all about, take a look at this…

Restaurant week is all about getting out there and exploring all of the fabulous independent eateries that are right on your doorstep, for even more fabulous prices.

All week long, you’ll be offered tantalizingly tasty menus from a variety of bistros, bars and brasseries for the incredible prices of just £10 for a two course lunch, or £20 for a three course dinner. This time a selection of ARW venues will also be hosting afternoon teas and tasting menus, so there really is something for everyone.

Above are just a few of the phenomenal dishes I tried last year from the likes of The Craftsman, Da Vinci Ristorante, 99 Bar and Kitchen and Bistro Verde, boy was I spoiled that week!

Joining the lineup this year you’ll also find venues such as The Kirkview cafe, Atlantis, Cafe Boheme, Cafe 52, Melt, Siberia and many more. You can find a full list of venues and a breakdown of what they will be offering on the Aberdeen Restaurant Week website, so be sure to check it out for all the latest updates. You can also head to the Aberdeen Inspired instagram for all the latest goings on and updates from the other amazing ARW ambassadors.

I’m lucky enough to be officially reviewing Cafe Harmony so keep an eye out for that, but unofficially, I can tell that this is going to be a terrible week for my diet as I work my way through some of the other amazing menus on offer (ZERO REGRETS ABOUT THIS).

There really is no better time to get out there and explore the best of our local cuisine, so book a table, maybe book a few, and have a fantastic Restaurant Week everyone.

Harris & Fox – Aberdeen’s newest cruelty free hair studio.

When it comes to hair, I can genuinely count the times that I’ve paid to have my hair cut or coloured over the past eight years on one hand. That isn’t to say that I’ve been walking round with a kitchen scissors botch job and six inch roots all this time, it’s just that I’ve just been fortunate enough to call some extremely talented stylists my best friends over the years.

One of the chosen few that I’ve actually parted cash with when I’ve fancied a new do is esteemed stylist and friend Ryan Harris (who once transformed my hair in to a vision of mermaid green), and for good reason.

Ryan has built quite the name for himself in Aberdeen over the last 10 years, receiving acclaim as an expert barber, a creative colourist, and a skilled stylist, having even travelled further afield as part of the GHD fame team.

After years of hard work, the next natural step in Ryan’s career was to open his own salon, so I went along to the launch party to have a good nosey round and see what he had to say about his amazing new venture.

Having spent his former years as a trained builder, Ryan has been at the helm of this project from the bottom upwards, creating this stunning space.

The first thing that struck me was that this was a salon with serious style. The mix of natural woods and cool metallics worked in perfect harmony with lots of luscious plant life to create an industrial yet contemporary feel in this light and airy space.

The real show stopper for me however was the delightfully dark interior of the waiting room downstairs, furnished with luxurious jewel toned velvets and soft lighting for a bang on trend style. Here customers can relax while their colours develop, or while they await appointments within the forthcoming beauty room. This is some seriously instagram worthy stuff here folks!

Ryan (right) with brother Euan who is in training to become a barber and join the team.

The party itself was fabulous, bustling with friends, clients, bloggers and beyond, with cocktails provided by Soul bar, a DJ set up in the corner, and The Pigs Wings on delicious vegan food duty.

Can you spy little old me right in the middle, queuing for a cocktail there..? Photos by Euan Harris.

There was even a super fun balloon burst competition which gave guests a chance to win some of the amazing cruelty free products that Harris & Fox will be stocking.

For any of you on a cruelty free mission, you’ll know that it’s not always the easiest to find amazing animal friendly hair care, especially when it comes to hair colours, so I was truly over the moon that someone with hair colouring expertise such as Ryan would be staying true to his own beliefs with his very own salon.

I asked Ryan what inspired him to go down this path, and here’s what he had to say:

“The hair products I’ll be using are called Eleven, they are an Australian brand that have just came over here. I’m actually one of the first salons in Scotland to stock them. They are peta approved and also made from natural products, they are awesome.
I decided to go cruelty free because it’s something I strongly believe in; having my fox dog in the salon I don’t think it’s fair if the products have been tested on animals.”

How incredible it is to know that you can look  and feel fabulous, completely guilt free.

Harris & Fox is now open and located at 81 Rosemount Viaduct, Aberdeen. You can book either by calling 01224 611990, emailing ryan@harris-fox.co.uk, or by downloading the Harris & Fox app.

Aberdeen Restaurant Week 2018 – my top spots for top eats!

If like me, you’re part of the #dietstartsmonday gang, Restaurant Week will be fast becoming one of your favourite times of year. Forget Christmas, Aberdeen Restaurant Week is here!

(If you’re reading this Santa, I didn’t mean it, and I’ve definitely been a good girl this year..)

Through some stroke of dumb luck, I was asked to be part of the official blog squad covering the second ARW and bringing you revues of some of the finest eateries in town. I know, it’s a tough job right, but someone’s got to do it. FYI, Calorie counters need not apply.

In case any of you missed out first time round, February brought us the inaugural Restaurant Week, aimed at bringing the foodies of Aberdeen out in force to dine at some of the finest local venues for a super affordable price. This time round it’s a two course lunch for £10, or a three course dinner for £20 at over 40 carefully selected establishments.

What better way to support some local businesses and discover new favourites, and sample some damn fine food along the way!

Read on for a round up of some of the best dishes I’ve tried this week, and that you definitely should too.

DaVinci – Ristorante Italiano

‘Tartufi al cocco’ at DaVinci.

DaVinci is a fabulous Italian just out of sight of Union Street where you can enjoy authentic Tuscan food cooked with heart and passion. With a massive veggie and vegan offering, this was always going to be top of my list to try out.

These vegan truffles were just to die for; sweet little chocolatey balls rolled in coconut with a sticky rum infused sauce, what’s not to like?!

The Craftsman

I really just love The Craftsman. Just a stone’s throw from Union Square, it’s the best spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the high street and find a cosy corner to enjoy a carefully selected craft beer or freshly roasted cup of coffee.

It doesn’t just end there though, their food offerings are just the definition of comfort food, but cooked with finesse and skill, and I’ve been banging on about the most insanely sumptuous pie that I tried there all week long.

The veggie option of ‘Curried vegetable and chickpea pie with spiced potatoes’ was just everything that I love delicately layered inside a golden flaky pastry house, and washed down with a cold sour cherry beer, this was the ultimate Sunday lunch.

Bistro Verde

At the heart of the merchant quarter on the picturesque Green, family run Bistro Verde has been the home of fresh fish based cuisine for as many years as I can remember.

I don’t often break the rules and eat fish, but if I’m going to do it, it’s going to be for a dish like this!

Don’t miss out on the duo of fishcakes which you can enjoy as part of the evening menu this Restaurant Week. They were fresh, full of flavour, and that lime and coriander yogurt was the perfect flavour pairing to bring it all together. Plus it just looks really pretty! Instagram I’m coming at ya…

‘Duo of fishcakes – Hake/beetroot tartar , peppered mackerel/lime and coriander yoghurt’

Full review will be live HERE any time now!

Ninety-Nine Bar & Kitchen

As much as we all love 99 for an expertly made cocktail served by the cheeky chappies behind the bar and the funky weekend vibes, I came to the realisation that I had never had a full meal here, so what better time to give it a bash than Restaurant week!

Rowie and butter pudding’ at 99.

That’s right, it’s another pudding, but how could I not include this hip-widening, mouth watering, just plain awesome Rowie and butter pudding!? If the phrase ‘a what now..?!’ is springing to mind, a Rowie is an Aberdonian ‘delicacy’ (I couldn’t use the term more loosely..), otherwise known as a buttery, or a morning roll. It’s satisfyingly salty, fatty, and absolutely delicious. I’ve beaten off many a hangover with a couple of these bad boys, so imagine my delight when I saw that they were being used in a pudding!

A #seeninthedeen cocktail to wash it all down.

Read the full review HERE, and I dare you not to pick up the phone and book a table right away!

Hopefully this has been enough to tantalise your taste buds and inspire you to get off the sofa this weekend and out in to the city center to try out some truly amazing cuisine that’s right on our door step, not just during Restaurant week, but all year round.

If you miss out this time, don’t panic, Restaurant week is set to be a biannual event with the next round commencing in February, thanks to the hard working guys at Aberdeen Inspired.

It’s been an fantastic week of eating my body weight in incredible food produced by some of the finest culinary talent around. The scales at the gym won’t thank me for it, but do I feel bad about it? Not one bit…

Art on your doorstep…Look again festival and the Etsy made local launch night.

Whoever said that “nothing ever happens in Aberdeen” (ahem..me a hundred times in the past..) couldn’t be more wrong. This weekend has been the most wonderful few art filled days celebrating our local creative minds in the way that they truly deserve, and I’ve loved every moment of it.

‘Look again’ festival returned for it’s fourth year determined to get our creative juices flowing through a well imagined mix of artistic installations, cinema screenings and talks, and a host of other activities.

Also on the agenda was one of my favourite social events of the year, the Grays School of Art degree show launch. What better way to spend a Friday evening than immersed in a world of creative loveliness, discovering a wealth of fresh talent, surrounded by like minded people, and of course with several wines to wash it all down. Don’t wine and art just go hand in hand so gloriously? There’s something nice about the sense of being cultured that you feel when in an artistic environment, whether people know that I’m about as cultured as a yogurt in real life or not. I’ve been going to the Grays show for years now, and the class and quality of what’s on display never ceases to amaze me. It really is inspirational.

However this blog post is to tell you about an event that I’ve always missed in the past, and I really wish I hadn’t, the Etsy Made Local Summer showcase. Yes that’s right, I’m banging on about shopping local again, but that’s because I really to feel so strongly that it is our responsibility to support our local creative industries in any way that we can.

This design fair held a well deserved spotlight over some of Aberdeen’s finest Etsy sellers, and offered us a selection of stalls exhibiting everything from illustration and ceramics, to jewellery and homeware.

The Liberty Kitchen had some extremely tempting delights on offer.

Attendees were treated to the prettiest glass of Pimm’s I’ve ever seen to stay cool while perusing the wares on display.

I wanted to take a moment to share some of my favourite vendors from the night with you all, in the hope that you might consider them the next time a birthday or special event comes round, so that you can give the gift of something genuinely unique and made with love.

Beauelle – by Rachel West.

Rachel is predominantly a jewellery designer, but I have to admit, it was her selection of gorgeous marbled coasters, trinket dishes and plant holders that really caught my eye. If I wasn’t on a trinket dish ban from the BF (apparently one in every room is enough..what does he know?!) I would have snapped a few of these right up. As a self confessed copper (read: anything shiny) addict, I absolutely adored the bang on trend mix of marble and metallics. If anyone really feels like being nice to me, I’ll have one of everything from this range for Christmas please!

Check out Rachel’s stunning clay work here.

Rose-Tea & Rabbit – by Deborah Cowan.

Lovers of Alice and Wonderland, Harry Potter and anything magically beyond, pay attention! Deborah’s vast collection of handmade bespoke jewellery is the perfect mix of modern vintage and boho chic. From skull cameos to beautiful agate bracelets, Rose-Tea & Rabbit has it all. Be prepared to spend a long time lustfully working your way through their extensive collection of beautifully detailed, whimsical pieces.

Take a look here.

Juniper Press – by Laura Bremner.

Juniper press offers intricate botanical inspired wares, covering everything from prints, to stationary, to homeware. I first fell for Laura’s designs at Botanica last year where we picked up a Gin print, which takes pride of place above our wee gin bar, and I’ve followed her work since. You might have spotted a Juniper Press design occupying a door near The Green as part of the Painted Doors project.

Find the perfect gift for the gin lover in your life here.

Leanh La Jewellery.

Leanh La creates quirky geometric wooden jewellery, laser cut and hand painted. These unique and stylish pieces are the perfect gift for that fashionable friend who has everything. Top of my wishlist is the ‘Triangular dots on dusty pink’ necklace, which personally I think would suit me just perfectly… (can you tell that I’m hoping the BF is reading this post?!). These colourful pieces are just what the fashion doctor ordered to really make an otherwise simple outfit pop.

Shop the collection here.

So there we have it, my round up of some if the finest Aberdeen based designers that you simply must check out next time you’re on a gift hunt. Stand out from the crowd and #SHOPLOCAL!

See you soon loves,
